A blessing is a spiritual force to be reckoned with. According to the Oxford Languages, the word blessing is defined as something that brings well-being to others. I discovered the miraculous power of blessing many moons ago, and this experience changed my life forever.
There was a time during my senior year when I experienced being singled out by a particular teacher in class for no apparent reason. She noticed every subtle move I made and brought it to everyone’s attention. She never failed to call me to recite in class, even though I wasn’t raising my hand, plus there were around 40 students in my class. There wasn’t a single day that passed when her eagle-like eyes didn’t notice me.
I was perplexed by the extra attention I was getting from my teacher. It could only mean two things. Either I was outstanding, or something was seriously wrong about me. I only hoped that it was the latter rather than the former. For someone who doesn’t enjoy being in the spotlight, it made me uncomfortable and extra vigilant.
At first, I did try my best to adapt to the situation. Since I knew the odds of being called during recitation were very high, I did my homework diligently and came to class always prepared. I also kept myself well-behaved at all times, especially when inside the school premises. I told myself that perhaps if I kept a low profile and followed the rules, all the attention would eventually dissipate and get redirected to someone else.
But it didn’t.
Coincidentally, I was reading up on a spiritual practice about blessing which consists of radiating unconditional love to another person and imagining the recipient in the most loving state possible. But before this can happen, we must first elicit the feelings of unconditional love within ourselves. After all, we can’t give something we don’t have. This can be accomplished by thinking of a happy memory or something we feel grateful for. As an already experienced meditator at the time, I saw the perfect opportunity to apply what I’ve learned. And so I did.
For about a week, I would spend 15-20 minutes daily radiating unconditional love to my teacher and imagining her in her most loving and compassionate state. In my mind’s eye, I would visualize my teacher as a happy and emphatic human being. Instead of focusing on her human flaws, I affirmed the seed of goodness inside her. Instead of projecting my personal bias, I perceived my teacher in her original state of wholeness and divine perfection.
On the third or fourth day, I noticed a subtle change in my teacher’s behavior. Her mood seemed more cheerful, and she was in good spirits. I also received lesser attention from her in the days that followed until the day came when I fell off her radar completely. I was pleasantly surprised with the results.
After witnessing the power of blessing firsthand, I try to use it as much as possible whenever I can. Today, it is part of my regular spiritual practice. I love radiating blessings to the land where I live, my pets, friends who might be struggling, and even myself. By doing so, I feel I get so much more in return because what we send out comes back to us eventually.
I’ve used the power of blessing on several occasions to turn an impossible situation around, to get through a difficult person, to clear a misunderstanding, to help someone get unstuck in life, and to create the best possible outcome.
One thing I like the most about blessing is that it doesn’t require permission. Why? One could argue that as much as we don’t have permission to perceive the worst in people, we also don’t need permission to see them in a radiant state. When performing a blessing on someone, we are essentially remembering the person’s authentic self—the part of us that is untouched by sickness and trauma.
Such is the power of blessing. Because it comes from a place of pure love and non-attachment to the outcome, it operates at a very high vibrational frequency, which makes it a formidable antidote for negative thought forms, psychic attacks, and curses.
What do you need a blessing for, dear reader?
